Updates on the U.S. Department of Education

March 20, 2025, the President signed an Executive Order entitled “Improving Education Outcomes by Empowering Parents, States, and Communities,” which orders that the U.S. Department of Education “take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return authority over education to the States and local communities while ensuring the effective and uninterrupted delivery of services, programs, and benefits on which Americans rely.”

MCOE is closely monitoring developments related to the future of the U.S. Department of Education. The directive has raised many questions about the future of federal education programs. While this order does not immediately eliminate the department, we recognize the uncertainty it creates for schools and families, particularly regarding funding for critical programs such as Special Education and Title I (federal funding to support low-income students and improve educational equity).

While most funding for schools in Mendocino County comes from the state, federal dollars remain essential for supporting students with disabilities, those from low-income families, and other critical programs. At this time, there is no indication of immediate changes or disruptions to these funds.

As we navigate these developments, MCOE’s role in supporting our districts and students includes:

  • Informing families, educators, and the community with timely updates while reinforcing that local schools remain committed to serving all students.
  • Anticipating potential shifts in funding or program administration and helping districts plan accordingly.
  • Working closely with state and federal partners to advocate for the continued stability of essential education programs.
  • Continuing to track developments and provide updates as more information becomes available.

MCOE’s existing partnerships with community organizations strengthen resources and support networks offered to students and families. Our focus remains on ensuring that every student in Mendocino County has access to the education and support they need to thrive.
