UPDATE! MENDOCINO COUNTY SCIENCE FAIR SHIFTS TO ONLINE PLATFORM
The Why:
The purpose of our Mendocino County Science Fair is to stimulate in young people an active interest in science and encourage them to apply creative and critical thought to the solution of science problems, and to foster school and community cooperation in developing the scientific potential of students in Mendocino County, and to give recognition for the work students have done.
MCOE has made the decision, after much research and deliberation, to shift to hosting a Virtual Science Fair instead of a face-to-face experience this year due to the concern of the COVID-19 outbreak across the state. We want to reiterate that as of March 10, 2020 there have been NO reports of COVID-19 in Mendocino County. However, for the safety and well-being of our community, we want to be proactive in our response.
Invitation:
Mendocino County Office of Education is inviting all current Science Fair participants who have submitted their registration to upload their project onto our Virtual Platform. We want to “show off” the science projects that are going on around the county.
We truly want to honor the work and dedication of our Mendocino County students. We hope that by offering a modified version of our County Science Fair, we will be able to provide a venue for all of us to celebrate the hard work and learning that all 136 projects generated throughout the County. All projects submitted will be uploaded into a Virtual Gallery for the community to view later this Spring.
Congratulations to the 59 projects (Class A and Class B 6th-12th grades) that will be judged in order to select the 10 final projects which will move forward to represent our County at the State Science Fair later this year in L.A. We will be using this Virtual Platform to judge and select the finalists for State.
How to Participate:
All entries must be uploaded by Monday, March 16, 2020 by 11:00 am. If you have any difficulty uploading or submitting your project, please be sure to get assistance from your school and/or Local Science Fair Coordinator before the deadline.
Fill out this online entry form and be sure to include the following:
- Include a caption that describes the experiment. Please include where the experiment was conducted.
- Be sure submitted videos and photographs conform to your school media policies regarding publication of identifiable students. And please read the “further details” below about how your images might be used.
- All previous information submitted will be utilized

If you are already designated as the Local District Event Coordinator, MCOE is offering phone consultation to assist you in uploading the required documentation as we want to ensure every project gets uploaded. Please call Julie Simental (707) 467-5112.
Mendocino County Office of Education staff will use the established Scoring Rubrics for the 59 identified projects (Class A and Class B 6th-12th grades) that are eligible to compete to represent our County at the State Science Fair. The Local Event Coordinators will be notified of the winners by the end of the day March 18th.
Submitted videos and photographs must conform to your local school media policies regarding publication of identifiable students. By submitting this media to us, you are giving permission to Mendocino County Office of Education to publish the videos and photographs.
All submitted projects will be uploaded and shared in an online gallery and the link will be available on the MCOE website later in the Spring.
