UKIAH HIGH WINS COUNTY MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION
UKIAH, CA -At the 31st annual Mendocino County Mock Trial competition earlier this month, members of the Ukiah High School Mock Trial team edged out the reigning champions from Laytonville High School to claim the Honorable Judge Ron Brown Memorial Perpetual Trophy and earn the honor of representing Mendocino County at the State Mock Trial competition in Sacramento on March 22-24.
Sponsored by the Mendocino County Office of Education (MCOE), the county competition gives students the opportunity to experience the American judicial system first-hand. Student teams argue both sides of a fictitious case developed by the Constitutional Rights Foundation, the statewide coordinators of this academic enrichment activity.
This year’s competitors included the Developing Virtue Girls’ School, Ukiah High School and Laytonville High School.
Student team members portrayed all key roles in the fictitious case of People v. Klein, the trial of Reagan Klein, a young adult resident of the fictional town of East Flamingo, California. Reagan is charged with two felony counts: making a false report of an emergency (in this case, commonly referred to as “swatting”) and making a criminal threat.
The mock trial event culminated in the top two teams arguing their cases in front of a packed house of parents and supporters. After an intense battle between well-matched teams, Ukiah High was crowned the winner by a margin of .0007 points. Ukiah High School’s winning team included Avery Barrett, John Cabaniss, Josefina Cavalin, Benjamin Coletti, Emma Dolan, Emily Dougherty, Cole Fetherston, Trix Holstine, Janvi Ishwar, Zoe Krofchik, Brayden Martinez, Elise Martinez, Ava Mortier, Gwynn Parrish, Diya Patel, Spencer Rico, and Dylan Schroeder, coached by teachers Matthew LaFever, Rosemary Eddy and attorneys Zach Stephens, Colin Morrow, and Alexander Rich.
Additional volunteers from the legal community who officiated and evaluated the competition included the Honorable Judges Clay Brennan and Ann Moorman; and Judges Pro Tem Ginervra Chandler and Jamie Pearl. Volunteers also included scoring panels manned by Jeffrey Aaron, Anthony Adams, Macci Baldock, Shannon Cox, Jennifer O’Brien, Edie Lerman, Lawrence Rosen and Frank Zotter. MCOE thanks the Mendocino Superior Courts for the use of the courthouse.
