2020 Ukiah High School Mock Trial Team
Mendocino County Office of Education invites all Middle and High schools to participate in the Mock Trial Competition student learning experience! The Mock Trial Competition is a theatrical presentation of a legal case created by the Constitutional Rights Foundation. Middle and High schools across the nation form student teams who perform eight different types of roles. Students use the US legal system from Pre-trial through to the Closing Arguments. Mendocino County professional Attorneys and Judges volunteer to support students in learning their roles and the challenge of thinking critically on their feet. Students say they enjoy how this extracurricular club uses competitive team spirit in a non-traditional sport. The Mendocino County winning High School team goes on to the State Competition where the winner then competes at Nationals in May. Learn more about Mock Trial here.
As part of the Mock Trial program, students will:
- Learn and perform a legal drama used by all schools
- Receive in-depth exploration of legal careers
- Compete against other schools, coached by legal experts
- Enhance skills such as public speaking, critical thinking & working as a team under pressure
- The County competition winner will continue on to State and potentially the National competition!
WHO - Middle and High schools in Mendocino County that register with Clinton Maxwell by Oct 10th 2022.
WHEN - Mock Trial teams gather in Mid-Oct. to discuss the County Scrimmage on December 3, & at the County Competition February 4, 2023. Teams often meet weekly with their attorney coaches.
WHY - Mock Trial teaches students to code their behavior to context because of the adult roles within a courtroom. Teachers use this to build student awareness to recognize other situations where they could better code behavior to reach their goals!
WHERE - County competition will be held at Mendocino County Superior Court 100 N. State St. Ukiah, CA 95482 as public health protocols allow.
