Poets in the Schools

Poet teachers visit students in grades 7-12 to assist them in creating their own poetry as well as discovering poetry created by other poets. An anthology of student poetry is collected and printed annually.  In 2011-12, students contributed poems for the anthology, Wave Upon Wave which has been published and distributed to the students.

Mendocino County Poetry Out Loud

Mendocino County Poetry Out Loud is a collaborative effort of the National Endowment for the Arts, the California Arts Council, and the California Poets in the Schools.  Poetry Out Loud encourages high school students to memorize and perform poems.

"Learning great poetry by heart develops the mind and imagination, " said Dana Gioia, former Chairman for the National Endowment for the Arts.  "It isn't just an arts program.  By immersing themselves in powerful language and ideas, the students will develop their ability to speak well, especially in public.  This is a skill they will use in the workplace and the community for the rest of their lives."  Poetry Out Loud helps students master public speaking skills, builds self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.
